Where does the information come from?
Public records: Medicare's nursing home inspections and staffing data, state licensing records for assisted living and board and care homes, state crime reports, and the US Census.
How is the grade calculated?
Nursing homes are graded on inspections, staffing, quality and fines. Assisted living and board and care homes start at 100 and lose points for serious citations and confirmed complaints. Any red flag caps a grade at B.
Can a community pay for a better report?
No. Communities can claim their page to add prices, photos and a response to any finding, and some choose a paid plan for extra tools. Paying never changes a finding, a score or where a community appears in search, and no community can edit or hide what the public record shows.
Which states are covered?
California today, starting with the nine Bay Area counties: nursing homes from Medicare's federal inspection data, and assisted living, memory care and board and care homes from the state's licensing records. Other states come after California is complete.
